Marlon Tapales rises up from two knockdowns in round 5 to knock out Pungluang Sor Singyu in Thailand and win the WBO bantamweight championship.

The title fight between Pungluang Sor Singyu and Marlon Tapales has been more than a year in the making and it didn’t disappoint with both men trading knockdowns before the Filipino turned the tables on the Thai to score a spectacular 11th round stoppage.

The long awaited fight took place at the Ayutthaya City park and neither man was able to gain a definitive advantage in the early exchanges. However Tapales’ superior speed was evident in the first two rounds as he looked to land quick combinations before circling away.

In round three Pungluang started to apply more pressure and succeeded in trapping the Flipino against the ropes and landing three right hands in quick succession. Tapales circled out and answered with a quick combination of his own with a right uppercut followed by a straight left cross.

Filipino boxer Marlon Tapales showed how deep he was willing to dig to become a champion, rising up from two knockdowns in round 5 to score one of his own in the sixth before finishing off Pungluang Sor Singyu in round 11 to win the WBO bantamweight title on Wednesday, July 27 in Thailand.

Tapales (29-2, 12 knockouts) of Lala, Lanao del Norte, Philippines ended Sor Singyu’s reign of terror against Pinoy boxers, which included a 20-0 record against Filipinos with wins over AJ Banal and Eden Sonsona. Tapales now joins Nonito Donaire Jr, Donnie Nietes and Johnriel Casimero as the 4 current Filipino world champions in pro boxing.

Tapales, a southpaw, exerted pressure on the titleholder Sor Singyu (52-4, 35 KOs) from the opening bell, trading his right uppercuts and left crosses for Sor Singyu’s right straights. Sor Singyu seemed moments from his second successful title defense in the fifth round when he dropped Tapales twice on body shots.

Tapales survived the round, and in the sixth stunned Sor Singyu with a left cross before a right hook to the top of the head put Sor Singyu down and nearly out. From that point, Tapales stepped up the pressure, mixing in hard right hooks to the body in hopes of preventing a second wind from the two-time world champion.

It was all over by the end of the tenth round, and a left cross near the beginning of the following round put Sor Singyu down for the count.
